The State of California has changed the kindergarten cutoff date—the date a child must turn 5 to be eligible for kindergarten—from December 2nd to November 1st for 2012. The next two years will also have cutoff date changes: October 1st in 2013 and September 1st in 2014. The cutoff date will remain September 1st from 2014 on, unless new legislation is introduced.  The changes were created by SB 1381 as a result of teachers’ concerns for their youngest students’ struggles with kindergarten readiness. The initial bill intended to create a transitional kindergarten program for the students with birthdays between the new and old cutoff dates, but the state dropped that component of the legislation because of budget cuts. 

The previous post for Mammoth Elementary School Kindergarten Round Up falsely stated that a child must turn 5 on or before November 2nd to be eligible for kindergarten in the fall of 2012, it should have said November 1st.

El Estado de California ha cambiado el punto de corte preescolar actualizada a la fecha un niño debe cumplir 5 para ser elegible para kindergarten de 2 dic hasta 1 nov de 2012. Los próximos dos años también tendrá cambios fecha de corte: 01 de octubre de 2013 y 01 de septiembre de 2014. La fecha de corte se mantendrán 01 de septiembre de 2014, a menos que la nueva legislación se introduce. Los cambios fueron creados por el SB 1381, como resultado de las inquietudes de sus estudiantes más jóvenes ‘maestros luchas con preparación para el kindergarten. Parents, if you live in the Mammoth Unified School District, please bring your child to Mammoth Elementary School to find out when and how to enroll your child in Kindergarten, meet the Kindergarten teachers, sign up your child for a pre-Kindergarten Assessment, and find out about the free Summer Bridge Program. Also, pick up your FREE Kindergarten Survival Kit!

From 5-6 and 7-8 pm, get your child a FREE dental screening (required for Kindergarten Registration) and topical fluoride varnish!

In response to recent events, Wild Iris in Mammoth Lakes is offering three new support groups: one for parents, one for pre-teens and one for teens.  Groups are meant to provide a safe environment to discuss issues or concerns that participants may have. Group times and dates will be determined based upon the needs of participants. Interested parties may call Wild Iris in Mammoth Lakes at 760-934-2491 for more information. Wild Iris also offers certified counselors for individual crisis and peer counseling to victims, family and friends of domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse. Services are confidential and are offered at no cost.
