Summary of First 5 Mono County Projects
First 5 Mono County School Readiness
In
October 2007, First 5 Mono County renewed a 4-year First 5 California’s
School Readiness Initiative grant (at $100,000 per year) to enhance
local efforts to improve school readiness.
Our
program, serving children and families who will be attending either
Mammoth Elementary School or Edna Beaman Elementary School communities
within Mono County, focuses on reaching and educating all parents
on how they can best prepare their child for school.
With
our school readiness coordinator, the program:
- Reaches
caregivers, parents and others in the “pre-Kindergarten community”
with information about how to holistically prepare children for
school.
- Provides
information and training opportunities between Kindergarten teachers,
preschool and child care staff, family child care providers, parents,
partner agencies and others.
- Assists
with organizing and supporting groups of parents to bring more
local child development activities, possibly a parent cooperative
preschool.
- Works
with local agency partners and collects best practice research
to provide school readiness programs and better inform our whole
community on what school readiness is and how to achieve it for
all of our young children.
In
addition, the program is funding the following projects:
- Mono
County Free Library’s Raising
a Reader , providing the pre-literacy training and activities
(via Red Book Bags) to parents and child care providers through
via the Bookmobile deliveries and local libraries.
- Mammoth
Elementary School’s and Edna Beaman Elementary Transition
to School Activities, which include
summer transition “bridge” program, improved outreach for
Kindergarten Round-Up and school start-up, performing standardized
assessments of all children entering school to assess readiness,
and parent education activities (On the Road to Learning) during
the school-year for parents of 3- and 4-year-olds.
- Mammoth Elementary School and Edna
Beaman Elementary host a special, Second Cup of Coffee,
for parents of children attending the Summer Bridge Program. This
is a chance for parents to come on campus, meet the principal,
and ask questions about the school and/or express needs or concerns
about the transition process for their children who will be entering
Kindergarten in the fall.
- Expand
the audience and content of IMACA’s
KidsBits quarterly newsletter and monthly calendar to reach
more parents and include more information and events across agencies,
with portions translated into Spanish.
- Update
and expand the content of the Early
Years Resource Directory to include more local information,
in particular for special populations and Spanish speakers.
- Offer
transportation and competent
translation and interpretation
resources for all school readiness events and workshops.
